Little Bitch
July 31, 2007
The Specials. Some people mistakenly think this song is called “one-two”, it’s “little bitch”. It’s from the 80’s but if you replace “London” with “Manhattan”, it could be the theme song for the summer of 2007. And you know we like our ska music down here at DJ Black Bolt and this was never a single (should have been), so we take an album cut…let’s go!
Kool Thing

Sonic Youth and Chuck D. Sonic Youth just played at McCarren Park in Brooklyn last weekend. I talked to someone who went to the show but was not familiar with their music. When you’re jumping up and down alongside thousands of screaming fans, it may be hard to pick songs out and remember them. Here’s one. another good one is “Kill Your Idols”. It’s also a 12″ single. “Kool Thing” features Chuck D from Public Enemy. I think the video is still on you-tube. Check it you, y’all.

Warren G. Out of all of of the Death Row affiliated rappers, Warren G was the mellowest. You can hear him riding low with a laid back style but you don’t see him pulling out a street sweeper to smoke some fools. He’s wearing the neutal black gang colors made popular of Ice Cube. Good Sunday listening. He’s also Dr. Dre’s step brother and Snoop Dogg’s friend. Doesn’t hurt.
Trying To Find a Balance
July 28, 2007
Atmosphere. A little bit of the punk rock, mixed in with the hip-hop. Kinda like what Limp Bizkit were trying to sound like before “Faith”. My favorite line “Stop writing raps and go play volleyball”
This is DJ Black Bolt wishing each and every one of you a very happy day.
Time 4 Sum Aksion

Redman. His first big hit. With a little help from a Cypress Hill sample. My favorite line – “Straight out of Jersey, you heard me”
Oblivious

Aztec Camera.. Love the Picasso style album art. This song goes out to everyone in my summer playwriting class, especially Rob Handel, our professor. I learned a lot, hopefully I grew a little. I know I was in the presence of some amazing artistic talent. Now that class is over, relax and enjoy your summer. I’ll let everybody about the DJ Black Bolt premiere party, which is still in the works. Drink tickets will be available so stay tuned.

The Presidents of the United States of America. I thought they would be around forever. But after this song they only had “Peaches”, “Peaches come in a can”, etc… very disappointing.
Ticket to Ride

Vanilla Fudge. One one of the first of the psychedelic rock bands. Note how they cover a Beatles song. Musicians have been covering and sampling each other’s work since music was invented. It’s how the art progresses. New music just doesn’t fall from the sky, it’s cobbled together from 90% old plus 10% new. It’s a chain and every musician is a link from the past and to the future. People! Stop suing and start playing.
The Choice is Yours (revisited)
July 23, 2007
The Black Sheep. The original version of “The choice is yours” is not the funky one which you have grow to love over the years. Some wise producer heard the first version said, “What is this song? It’s not funky. Go back in the studio and make it funky!” Which they promptly did. This is the funky version.

Malcolm McLaren and the Supreme Team. They brought hip-hop to the U.K. and started the whole “Chilling not Illing” thing. Fat gold chains with mercedes benz hood ornaments (Beasties wore VW Bug hood ornaments).
Kind of a confusing cover. Looks like Neneh Cherry hidden back there. What do you think?
