Hall and Oates. 70’s and 80’s soul rockers/cuddle music. Their songs have been sampled by innovagtive hip-hop producer Prince Paul for the De La Soul (Say No Go => Change of Speak). IThe majority of the selections on this site are 12″ records that have pictures of the artist. Or at least interesting cover art. There’s something about pulling an actual record from the crate and looking at it before you play it that is very different than selecting a song from a play list in your i-tunes. I’m trying to hold onto that feeling as long as I can. “Changes come around real fast make us women and men” – John Mellencamp

Puff Daddy. With a little help from Ma$e. So many classic lines “All you got is Ph.D., Player Haters Degree”. “Ma$e stop smoking LaLa’s. Puff, Why try? I’m a thug I’m a die high”. Samples from Grandmaster Flash (The Message) and Ace of Base (Break My Stride). A classic album cover. Puff Daddy with his pendulous lower lip, Ma$e looks like he can’t remember where left his car keys.

Burning Sensations. From the “Repo Man” soundtrack. It’s an 80’s movie, a comedy with music from Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, the Circle Jerks acting by Harry Dean Stanton, Emilio Estevez. It’s a cult classic like “Caddyshack” or “Desperately Seeking Susan”.

Eric B. and Rakim. “Thinking of a master plan ain’t nothing but sweat inside my hand…”. This song came out around the same time as M/A/R/S “Pump up the volume”. Both songs sampled the hell out of everything. Eric B. and Rakim had the advantage of a funky beat. One question still haunts me. Who is the female singer at the beginning of the record? Where is she from? What language is she singing in and what song is she singing? Send answers, not guesses, to info@djblackbolt.com.

Fun Boy Three. The band created by former Specials lead singer Terry Hall with other former Specials Neville Staples and Lynval Golding. Terry Hall wrote this song for his girlfriend, Jane Wielden of The Go-Go’s. They were trying to keep their relatinoship a secret. The Go-Go’s did it first but I like the FB3 version better. If you listen carefully it is clearly a song written by an English-person, not an American. The lyrics are way too dry and sarcastic.

Black Flag. From “The Decline of Western Civilization” soundtrack. The original band lineup, before Henry Rollins joined (Ron is the lead singer). The guy on the cover is not Ron from Blag Flag. He’s some other passed out California hardcore punk rocker. I told you hardcore punk rockers predicted the future. Back in 1981 people in California were already extra xenophobic about Mexicans coming over the border. Hence this song mocking the attitude of the “white majority”. Punk rockers also predicted the decline of western civilization and the end of American world supremacy. The even talked about the negative effects of suburban housing developments: Circle Jerks – “Ventura Boulevard, Century City, everything looks so nice and pretty”.

The Cure. “Excerpt – the cure live” is the name of the 12″. There are two great songs on this record, “A Forest” and “Primary”. Both songs are from “Happily Ever After” a two record set with only two good songs both of which appear on the same 12″. Robert Smith is at the top of the Totem Pole. Who is the Black guy at the bottom? Probably only real cure fans know. I just like the music.
