The Specials. Live. They were the cornerstone of the second wave ska revival 1977-1980. From the album Dance Craze which is aalso movie that you should see. I wonder if it’s on Netflix? If you’re looking around Netflix, see if the movie “Rude Boy” featuring the clash is available.

Arrested Development. Originally lauded by the music industry as a postive role model hip-hop band. They, along with Will Smith used to win all of the Grammy awards for best hip-hop band. Other bands would give them a hard time, saying they were soft. I guess MS Speech from Arrested Development decided that he had enough. In this song, he fights with 4 or 5 of his detractors in defense of his principles (don’t grab my girl’s ass as she walks by). It’s one of those moments in a band’s life where they try to change their image but it’s not enough towards where they want to go and it’s too far where they used to be to go back. Caught in limbo. It’s a shame. It’s a good song. I wonder how they got Sly Stone to let them do it. Maybe he doesn’t own the publishing rights.

Fishbone. I remember the first time I heard this band. My roommate from California, Fraz, said “you’ve never heard Fishbne? I thought you would be all over Fishbone!” So he played this record and after that I was all over Fishbone. I would see them every time they played in New York. Once, I snuck into The Ritz (now Webster Hall) on 11th street pretending to be part of the band. Skanking to the beat and diving off the stage. Feeesh-Bone!
