You may know this song from the movie “Beetlejuice”.

Suassuna and Dirceu. From Brazil. This ones goes out to Mestre No from the Boca de Rio section of Salvador, Brazil. I spent a few weeks in Brazil and Mestre No hooked me up. I love the music of Capoeira. It’s got a the African call and response form which you also find in Jazz, Funk, Hip-Hop.

Suassuna and Dirceu were really inventive and expiremental in their capoeira music, they use flute and guitar in some of their songs. This selection, however, is a medly of some of the most well-known capoeira songs. You play capoeira while musicians sing and play right in front of you. It’s a lot of fun. My favorite song? “A canoa virou marineiro mas no fundo do mar tem dinherio” – the sailor fell overboard but he found there was treasure at the bottom of the ocean. My canoe has tipped over but I’m still looking for my treasure.

Mongo Santamaria. He practically invented Afro-Cubano Jazz. Imagine being at a party at a brownstone in Brooklyn in the late 60’s and hearing this song. The girl dancing with has high heels and a short skirt, the guy is wearing a shark skin suit and an extra thin tie. Perhaps you have been smoking a little grass, no? If I could get a girl in a dress to dance with me to this song, and really mean it, then my night would be complete, hell, my entire week would be complete. The feeling might even last until June.

At the end of the song Mongo says a few words to the crowd.
